At the time these pictures were taken, in 2020, this building was the home and studio of ceramicist Sabrina Armand Bennett. It was originally commissioned by her grandparents.
The house is distinguished by its vaulted ceilings and their impressive height, which ensure abundant natural light and excellent ventilation. It was the perfect space for an artist such as Bennett.
Villedrouin utilized the "Dunbrick" (5 x 6 cm cement bricks)—which feature a recess on one side—to create a distinctive rhythmic pattern across the surface of the vaults.
Access to the property used to be through the yard of the
home above it. A new path on the backside of the lot was created to ensure privacy and autonomy.
Mrs Bennett brought her aesthetics and sense of color to this building to great advantage.
Villedrouin has often stated that he is not a colorist. He generally left the brick, cement and stone elements that make up his building weather naturally. However, the terracotta finish his cousin applied to the exterior walls fully met with his approval and gave Villedrouin an appreciation for possibilities he had not explored on his own.
